一所住宅^1(dwelling)(EnglishEntry missing)、一個住宅單位(1(dwelling unit))或住所^{1(living quarters)}(EnglishEntry missing)，都是統計概念，用以表示適合一戶人(110-3)使用的居住設施。住宅的大小，以住宅的房間^2(room)(EnglishEntry missing)數或住宅的平面面積^{3(surface area)}(EnglishEntry missing)來計算。居住的擁擠程度^{4(degree of crowding)}(EnglishEntry missing)是住宅大小和居住人數的函數。擁擠標準是用來區分過度擁擠的住宅^{5(over crowded dwellings)}(EnglishEntry missing)和未充分使用的住宅^{6(insufficiently occupied dwellings)}(EnglishEntry missing)。未使用的住宅^{7(unoccupied dwelling)}(EnglishEntry missing)指的是長期或者暫時未用來居住的住宅。

• 1. 一所住宅可以是一座私人房屋(private house)或其中的一部分，或一片公寓中的一所公寓。在美國住宅還劃分為一戶結構(one-household structure)和多戶結構(multiple-household structure)，凡不屬於戶的成員的人都算作住在集體宿舍(group quarters)之中。在住房統計中也有按層(floors)數統計。在歐洲，底層(ground door)通常不予計算，而在美國則把底層叫作第一層(first floor)。

住宅的使用者可以是房屋的所有者(owner¹(EnglishEntry missing))，也可以是租賃者(tenant²(EnglishEntry missing))，他從所有者那裏租賃住宅，這樣的所有者稱之為租賃者的房東(landlord¹(EnglishEntry missing))。再租賃者(sub-tenant³(EnglishEntry missing))是從租賃者那裏租賃住宅的人。佔據自己無權使用的住宅的人，叫作擅自佔用者(squatter⁴(EnglishEntry missing))。

• 2. 把住宅轉租給再租賃者的租賃者，叫作第一租賃者(principal tenant)。住宅或單元房間可以帶家具出租，也可不帶家具出租，分別稱之為帶家具的住宅(furnished dwelling)和不帶家具的住宅(unfurnished dwelling)。
